a "Ping" in network terms, and a "ping" in blog terms are very different  
things, Well at least technically.

If you were to ping "http://rpc.pingomatic.com/" then it will timeout/non  
existant, but pinging "rpc.pingomatic.com" will result in it working fine  
(Networking term 'ping' here)

however, a (network) ping will only tell you that theres a server under  
that domain name, being active, It will not tell you if theres a server  
running a script which accepts (blog) 'pings'.
