Just an update. Updated to the latest trunk r7246 and tried another plugin
auto upgrade
(changed Akismet's version #) and received the following this time:

---Downloading update from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/akismet.zip

---Unpacking the update

---Incompatible archive: PCLZIP_ERR_BAD_FORMAT (-10) : Unable to find End of
Central Dir Record signature

Previous update was to r7236 and the output was this:

---Downloading update from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/akismet.zip

---Unpacking the update

---Incompatible archive: Unable to find End of Central Dir Record signature

r7222 gave me this:

---Downloading update from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/akismet.zip

---Unpacking the update

---Incompatible archive:

If there's any info anyone needs such as PHPinfo() output, list of activated
plugins or anything else please
let me know and I'll be glad to provide.

Bluehost (no restrictions of any kind)

PHP 5.2.5

> + User clicks upgrade link

> + WordPress attempts to locate the WordPress folder
> + WordPress downloads the latest .zip
> + WordPRess extracts the files from the .zip to a temporary directory
> + WordPress deletes the old plugin files
> + WordPress copies the new files into their place
> + WordPress deletes its temporary files, And upgrade complete
