There's still a way to run the current trunk version on a test install 
and downgrade when something breaks: install Tortoise SVN (presuming 
you're on Windows), check-out the current trunk then export it to a 
folder on your HD. That would give all latest files similar to 
downloading the latest zip from trac. Then use FTP to update.

When something breaks, instead of selecting "Update" from Tortoise's 
menu, select "Update to revision" and enter the revision number you want 
to downgrade to (can be seen on trac or by checking the log from 
Tortoise), then export and FTP the files making sure all is overwritten 
on the server.
