Hmm, it could be the second one as it doesn't seem to be happening as often
since that date. Then again, it could be the first as there was nearly half
a day between Akismet's first try and me rechecking it. Thanks.

There are two possibilities, with the first being a little more likely:
1. When you first checked the spam it wasn't obvious to Akismet. Since
you first checked the crowd has trained it.
2. When the comment was received talking to Akismet wasn't successful.

For the second, "on the client side we'd like to make the WP plugin
deal more gracefully with not being able to contact the mothership."
