[wp-testers] Link categories, once more

Hi all,

yes, once again with the link categories.

I did read the lists (wp-hackers and wp-testers) about this issue, and I
understand the reasons for the changed link behaviour. However, there
are still some questions. The version I'm refering to is r4701, checked
out half an hour ago.

I'm afraid that many people, although understanding the change, will
have difficulties with the new way of managing links and link
categories. I think the way categories could be created and managed in
2.0.x is much more intuitive than now. Sure, some people add links and
(as needed) create new categories in that interface. But many others do
it as a top-down-process: they first create the structures (i.e. link
categories) and then fill it (with links).

It might be better to offer a more obvious way to manage link and post
categories. This could be either in Manage->Categories, where you might
want to determine what you use a category for. Or it could be integrated
into the blogroll management, where one could create new link categories
one after another.

The new link management is very immature, in my humble opinion. This is
not a statement against the new logic, but rather against the
implementation in the admin area. (I am very busy at the German WP
forums, so I'm pretty sure there will be many users upset and
overstrained with the new link management.)

Also, when I upgrade a 2.0.6 installation to 2.1 by uploading the new
files and running /wp-admin/upgrade.php, the db table wp_linkcategories
is still kept. If I just for fun drop this table, everything seems to
remain smooth. So I wonder why this table is kept. Just for the
backwards compatibility with some plugins?

Best regards,
Alex
