Matt:
I had a friend, who is experienced with the 'Net, installs, MySQL, and
such, so I had him do an install on one of my servers, just to see how
painless the install process would be for someone totally unfamiliar
with WP.

During the install, he didn't see the message in the table prefix
field that says, "Only numbers, letters, and underscores please!" -- I
should him it was there when I pulled down the config file from the
site, manually edited the file (I told him where install package was
and let him walk through using WP's "find me" setup). In setting up
the table field, he gave the field the name of:
	"wordpress_2.1-beta1"

Obviously, that would not work. It generated errors, like the one below.

"Now we're going to create the database tables and fill
	them with some default data.

"WordPress database error: [Access denied for user:
'xxxxx14156@%' to database 'wp_WP2'] CREATE TABLE
	wp_WP2.1categories ( cat_ID bigint(20) NOT NULL
	auto_increment, cat_name varchar(55) NOT NULL default '',
	category_nicename varchar(200) NOT NULL default '',
	category_description longtext NOT NULL, category_parent
	bigint(20) NOT NULL default '0', category_count bigint(20)
NOT NULL default '0', link_count bigint(20) NOT NULL
	default '0', posts_private tinyint(1) NOT NULL default
	'0', links_private tinyint(1) NOT NULL default '0',
	PRIMARY KEY (cat_ID), KEY category_nicename
	(category_nicename) )"

I know someone else brought this kind of error up a few days ago, if
memory serves me. Is there anyway to put in a "Oops, you didn't read
the instructions" message if someone uses an illegal character during
the install process? Sometimes, perhaps, like the coding used for
form-field validation could work. Or would it?

It just seems it would be a heck of a lot easier since many new folks
are coming to WP, and yes, even for me, as I am pushing a bunch of
people to leave other platforms and move their blogs to WP. In fact,
some of their blogs are now, and some of the soon-to-be moved blogs
will be hosted on my servers once they jump to WordPress. I just know
these folks, dear friends as they may be, will be PITAs and send me
email and IMs asking for help. In return, I will tell them to RTFM.
It just seems this kind of thing could be handled in the setup process
fairly easily, it seems.
