Thanks for the tip, but it didn't solve my problem. Three of the
other roles that _do_ show up uses utf-8 two-byte characters
(Administrator = Administratör, Editor = Redaktör, Author =
Artikelförfattare) and the roles that are affected don't.

One of the roles that doesn't work look like this in the database:

s:6:"mpelev";a:2:{s:4:"name";s:6:"MPelev";s:12:"capabilities";a:5:{s:
10:"edit_posts";i:1;s:4:"read";i:1;s:18:"read_private_pages";i:1;s:
18:"read_private_posts";i:1;s:7:"level_0";b:1;}}

 From what I can see there's nothing funky about it, right?

And when looking at the usermeta for that particular user assigned
the role it doesn't differ from other users in any way but the role
name and the role name character count (s:6:"MPelev";).

Well, if nothing else it must in some way be related to the plugin.
But I still can't see how since the user isn't showing in the post
panel where the plugin really isn't active...

I figure that if there's nothing wrong in the DB, the user should
show, right?
