They're not gone... they're just in a format that WP 2.0.4 isn't  
expecting.

WordPress doesn't have "downgrade" code built in, so unless:

- you have a 2.0.4 backup
- someone creates a downgrade script
- you manually reverse the upgrade DB changes

... you're stuck with 2.1.  It'll probably be easier to just fix the  
recent-comments plugin or have the author update it for WP 2.1
