An optional Plugin descriptor line on the top could be created that takes a URL to a text/RSS/XML file with current plugin versioning.

Eg.
Update URL: http://www.example.dom/my-plugin-version.xml


Call it optional as the addition of screenshot.png was optional, yet encouraged, to themes.
