I might add that Linux kernel development follows the same type of path with
their versioning.

Version-number.odd-number = development/testing kernel

Version-number.even-number = release kernel

For instance, it went from 2.4 to 2.6 for release kernels with 2.3 and 2.5
being test/development.

Because someone told it some time ago. What do you thought? When several ask
the same it was not their invention and I don't have the time to search for
it now.

I only asked because I'm using a 1.6 CVS and would like to know if there is
diferences OR if this is the new numbering and I should forget 1.6 OR if
this is a parallel development.

Some projects do that, you know. Having a stable version that is being
upgraded slowly and a more unstable version that is also being under
development at the same time for the more corageous.

So. What is the case with Wordpress?

Thanks in advance.

.72
1.0
1.2
1.5

so why the assumption that it would be 1.6 ? :)
