This uses the rel=external as opposed to the target=_blank to achieve this.

Unfortunately, it will require some javascript.

Also regarding the XHTML point of view and _blank.
_blank is perfectly XHTML 1.0 Trans though not 1.0 Strict or 1.1

It just is a choice of which standards you want to achieve. I'm happy with
Transistional.
