Thanks for the tip. Works now.

I think I tried the "minimalist" .htaccess rules on 1.5.x at some point, and
found that they didn't work on DH with PHP as CGI.

Confirmed.

This will happen in DreamHost's CGI mode (Running PHP as CGI), but not
in mod_php4 mode.

ticket 1581 didn't fix the problem (in CGI mode).
