If you go with Google Analytics (I use this on most of my sites), this 
plugin will let you avoid having to modify your theme, and will give you 
some simple controls over how Google Analytics tracks your site:

In all fairness, this is kind of self-promotion because it was written 
by me, but it's free and a lot of people use it, and it might be useful 
for you.
