The MO file is valid an works well for me, so the cause has to be
somewhere else.

Could you see what's on line 85 of wp-includes/gettext.php file? There
is a comment in the version in 2.7.1 and it haven't been modified for
more than a year. Is there a chance you didn't upgrade this file or it
was changed after that?
