Subject: [wp-polyglots] Theme translation
Message-ID: <20070311161835.GF23672@kimmo.suominen.com>
Hi!
It looks like the gettexted theme in the I18N repository is not up-to-date.
Is anyone planning on updating it to 2.1.x?
http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress-i18n/theme/trunk/
It would be easier to translate a gettexted theme, and any themes using
the same nomenclature would get a "free" translation as a side product.
Best regards,
+ Kimmo (trying to get through the whitspace changes from 2.0.9 to 2.1.2)

I myself have tried before, but couldn't keep the theme really
up-to-date. I used to just i18n it from scratch every time I hoped to
just update the differences, which had accumulated by the time I had
updated it the previous time.
Again, I think we should to persuade the others that default theme
should be i18ned. Anyway, if somebody wants to touch the string by
himself, he usually won't be using the default one. Actually there
aren't many blogger, who are using it. On the other hand the default
theme should be friendly enough especially for those, who are not
technically proficient.
We can also keep only an gettext-full version and then, if needed, to
generate a fixed-strings one.
Happy translating,
Nikolay.

Thanks.

I also have the same question. Is anybody responsible for committing
translation back into subversion, or translators shall try to ask for
commit access to wordpress-i18n?
Sometimes I saw translation posted here, but then ignored. It
is really a waste of effort.

According to this
doc,
the following information is for my language.
All English Names : Burmese
All French Names : Burmese
ISO 639-2 : bur/mya
ISO 639-1 : my
But I'm not very sure what will be two letters for my language
(Burmese/Myanmar) and my country (Myanmar).
It would be great if anyone can give me a link for reference.

It's the classic, not the default theme, isn't it?
> Again, I think we should to persuade the others that default theme

I've never managed to understand the philosophy behind the "no-gettexted-default-theme",
but it doesn't matter :-) I made an i18n-ed version from the deafult Kubrick theme.
It's almost up-to-date if I remember well it's based on 2.1.
There is no plural forms support for instance. (Nowadays I have no time to play with it.)
But it's working with 2.1.2. At least I think so :-)
If somebody would like to use it, drop me a line and I'll send it.
regards,
Tom

Agreed.
If they don't agree with it, why don't we keep them up-to-date on the

Tom,
I'd like to try it, so could you send it to me?

It will be great if somebody has the power, will and time to regularly
update the i18n version of the default theme.
Thank you!
Happy i18n-ing,

Perhaps this was already discussed elsewhere, but why isn't the default
theme included with wordpress i18ned?

I believe the reason given was that it's easier for people to edit
without all the i18n stuff.
It's a major annoyance, because people download the translation and then
come back asking why only the admin part is translated. The least that
could be done is provide both a gettexted and non-gettexted version.

What's more, because the translation is hardcoded, we have to comb
through any new version of the theme in order to see which file needs
to be redone. This wouldn't be a problem if the theme didn't evolve,
but it's a fact. It's cumbersome enough to have to hardcode the
translation for some files at every version...

I second that. Furthermore, I do believe that most people who would alter
the theme would understand enough English to get by regardless of the
gettext functions. Should some l10n team (particularly non western, I guess)
think that they'd have to hardcode the translation, I'm certain they would
be able to wipe out the gettext strings just as easy as simply translating
the bits we have already translated. Actually, it would probably be a lot
easier to pinpoint the strings in need of translation if they are marked by
__e's etc.
I say, leave it to the translation team to decide whether their users would
be able to insert new functions in a gettexted theme or not.

No, that's the last thing people want, even for non-western languages.
It's only when english are marked incorrectly that non-english people
start to wipe it out and hardcode their own translation. I mean
hypothetical situation like:
This kind of chopping makes most non-english translation impossible.
Avoid this and people would be more than happy.

It hasn't change, but I'm in favor of not concatenating things for
just that reason.
Explicitly specifying a 'bbpress' domain for every string in bbPress
in really obnoxious. I have been waiting for someone to figure out
some clever code that will make things work via magic.
Sorry I took so long to respond; this list got lost somewhere for me.

Here's what I've managed to do so far.
* Tried to google for the answer to my question.
* Installed the Language Switcher plugin
* Created the languages directory in wp-includes, uploaded ja.mo and ja.po
* Got the plug-in working, I can switch between Japanese and English,
but the theme (Abstrakt3c 2.0) needs to be localized. That's where I'm
stuck.
* Installed poEdit on windows.
* Put wordpress.pot, ja.mo, ja.po in a folder, opened wordpress.pot in
PoEdit. I can see what has already been translated into Japanese.
Obviously it doesn't include anything from the theme.
Next, I think I have to create a .pot file for the theme or add the
theme's files to wordpress.pot. A tutorial on what to do next, written
with a big, red crayon would be most helpful.
Bonus question: Is Language Switcher the best way to go? I like that
it seems rather generic and doesn't have the compatiblity problems
Gengo appears to have with other plugins.
Thanks,
Rich

Theme translation is not about the wp.po files.
Everything from theme that should be localized should go
through the WP translation macro
if the translation strings are a part of passed variables toa function
function_name(__("SOME_STRING"))
You need a gettexted theme.
If you like abstrakt3c that much download another theme and
check the code for the things I've mentioned

Try Polyglot http://fredfred.net/skriker/index.php/polyglot
I've tried it, it works good. Most of the people say that is
the best way to make your blog multilingual.

I'd have thought the same, until reading more from wp-hacker [1].
Wordpress people will work hard to block this effort from entering
official repository[2].
