Inline translations are preferred.  The gettext version of the theme is
supplied for those needing to switch their templates between languages.

By the way, a gettext theme is not the only way to provide templates in
multiple languages.  You can use multiple themes (each in a different
language) which automatically switch with the locale.  You can give your
site a different look for different languages if so desired.  You could
install three different inline translations of the default theme and
automatically switch between them.

The gettext version of the default theme will make use of
load_theme_textdomain(), which is present in 1.5.
load_theme_textdomain() will look in the theme directory for a mo file
matching the current locale.  All themes have this option.
