I'm about to put a gettext version of the default theme in the
wordpress-i18n repository.  However, all locales should still consider
doing an in-line translation.  Matt and I no longer get as many of those
"what are those weird __() things" questions now that the default theme
is largely gettext free.  That's a good thing.  Reducing overall
template complexity is a worthy goal, and this is a significant step
toward it.
