[wp-hackers] generate_rewrite_rules help

I have been using add_rewrite_rule() for a long time, but now I am in a place
where I am rewriting about a dozen urls.  Looking for a simpler solution, I
came upon  generate_rewrite_rules

but the documentation is sparse. 

Has anyone here made use of this action?  If so, could you share the what
the proper application is, and any example code you have showing its proper
use?
