Excellent point. You might also take advantage of taxonomies to sort users,
which would only work with a CPT.

If letting them create seriously rich-media portfolios is an important part
of the utility of the site then the core user profiles might not be enough.
I still think it's worth considering profiles for their simplicity though.
You could always offer a 'Portfolio URL' contact option, and letting them go
wild with embedded images might not be desirable in the first place if you
want the various profiles to have a similar look.
