[wp-hackers] wp-comments-post.php causing long running apache processes

I am looking at /server-status on a few of my web servers, and I'm seeing
wp-comments-post.php continue to run forever (until the apache logs are
rotated every night):

Srv PID Acc M CPU SS Req Conn Child Slot Client VHost Request
18-1 8922 1/464/464 W 35.22 33059 0 0.0 0.08 0.08 94.127.76.21
blog.example.com POST /blogname/wp-comments-post.php HTTP/1.1

Does anyone know why this might be happening? Could it be related to not
having an enterprise akismet account?

The other file I see causing the same issue is wp-polls/wp-polls.php, but I
don't know if it's related

Thanks for your help,
