Alex: it's a filter, so really it has nothing to do with the theme. I was
merely suggesting in my post that theme authors should add that bit of code
to their theme's functions.php file to provide a default avatar that matched
their theme.

The code works exactly the same if you were to stick it into a tiny plugin
(or your own theme's functions.php which is probably easier).

An array of default Gravatars to pick from gets passed through the
avatar_defaults
filter at which point you can modify it (i.e. add your own).
