Stop giving away our secrets, jk.

Yes, the WP.org directory already sticks all your files in a folder matching
the stub name of your plugin at WP.org. No need to stick them in a subfolder
on /trunk/

There are definitely trade offs for throwing everything into the trunk, one
major problem is Viper's first comment which is clutter, I'd imagine the
majority of people would just throw the entire directory in their
wp-content/plugin folder without taking out the unnecessary files, i.e.
screenshots and readme.txt. But then again, if they were to make that
mistake the plugin would break if we kept it the way it is.

Maybe we instead of throwing everything into the trunk we change the name of
that subdirectory.
