I've just put this online:

It allows to hook into the WP update notification mechanism without needing
to host a plugin on wordpress.org. Just add two lines to your plugin file:

Update Service: [update service]
Update Tag: [update tag]

Yada, yada, yada.

Similar plugins arguably exist already; This one merely plays around with
the update_plugins option.

A quick and dirty version service is also for grabs. It would be very sweet
if someone could toss in some code to synchronize the versions file with
plugins in an svn repository. I'll be quite happy to put it alongside.
