That sounds like an intriguing solution -- again, for 2.1 or something. ;)

Should minimize maintenance of all feed models, allow the old stuff to 
continue to exist going forward (thus, NOT 'ditching' anything), and allow 
for easy expansion to new models/datatypes/etc.
