+1 to almost everything Luc had to say...

What about the possibility of syndication feeds using templates? Would 
that help?

I'm hacking up wp-atom.php quite a bit, as it's got issues... I ended up 
creating my own feed-functions-extended.php to fix some Atom issues and 
for XSPF. I know Clint is working on MediaRSS as well, and there might 
be more in the pipeline. (The Yahoo! Map API with geodata + other stuff 
in an RSS 2.0 feed can do some very cool things!)
