It doesn't actually work the way you think. Test it out sometime.

Yes, that stood for a while in 1.6. It was discovered that the iframe
loading time impacted the user experience, sometimes to a point of
unusability.

If you have empirical data showing the new pinger to be inferior to
either of those methods, please bring it forward :-)
