Disagreed.

1. Idiot playing around with preferences activates persistent connections
2. Shared server brought down
3. Host blames WordPress

I think a better way of handling things would be to wait until the
database layer is abstracted (this is still on the development agenda,
right?) then see if a plugin can handle it.
