Completely agreed. The returned document is 28 bytes. That's hardly
going to burn a hole in WordPress' wallet in terms of bandwidth usage.

Just one request: can there be a seperate URL that returns the latest
stable version number (i.e., '1.5.1.3'), and perhaps even a third with
the latest stable version string (i.e., '1.5.1.3 Strayhorn branch' or
whatever)?
