Smarty is not an appropriate solution.  You'll be replacing WordPress's 
PHP template layout system with an equivalently complex templating 
solution that is ultimately less powerful, and equally confusing.  
Smarty does not add any additional abstraction that hasn't been already 
accomplished with PHP and a proprietary WordPress API.
