A fair amount of the routing on the internet, especially EU traffic, went
down this morning because the global routing table hit 512k.

Why this was a problem: On a rather widespread number of Cisco routers (you
know, those things that basically run the whole internet), the default
routing table only allows for 512k max routes. So some routes got dropped
and thus, no route existed for a wide range of connections. You couldn't
connect to lots of sites because the routers didn't know where to send your
traffic.

It's been known for a few months that it was going to happen:

So, lots of systems people everywhere this morning spent some time
reconfiguring their routers and possibly upgrading their memory.

For an overview of what was affected: Everything was affected. See
http://downdetector.com/ for example. All those blue graphs should usually
be quite flat.
