Oh my, Mika, I found it: the $wpdb->escape() call that I couldn't track
down is in *sunrise.php*!

On line 11:

$dm_domain = $wpdb->escape( $_SERVER[ 'HTTP_HOST' ] );

That's WordPress MU Domain Mapping Plugin, right?
