I agree don't shorten URLs unless you need to - but *only* because
you're adding a redirect with no purpose otherwise.

In regards to "safety":

http://www.example.com/mypersonalblog/blogpage/something 

is just as likely to be "bad" as:

http://bit.ly/abc

Just because you can see the end-point, doesn't make the end-point any
safer, unless you can personally "fully" trust that domain.

My only issue with shorteners is that you don't know what you're 
clicking on. Not clicking on unknown links has been drilled in to me 
since day 1 of Internet usage, so to suddenly experience systems which 
are designed to obfuscate is foreign to me.  I guess we have twitter to 
blame for this.
