Yeah, I did that, as I suspected she didn't have PHP :)

The problem was, when you would go to (since we're using her site as an 
example) blixonline/phpinfo.php, it would give me a "file not found" 
error.

Not until I put the file in the weird folder on her server (where the 
root *was*) did the file actually show up. (same with the .txt file I 
tried - I had started with that one) The only reason I kept testing was 
because I had seen PHP files on her site (through the browser) and those 
were coming up fine - so I knew she had it - it was just a matter of 
finding the right folder.

Apparently it was some weird configuration where the root was a couple 
of folders down, so anything you put *above* that wouldn't be found. 
But finding the root folder was a complete PITA.
