I suggest you contact Jim Groom, who has a multisite blog that syndicates content from the many DS106 courses:

Subject: [wp-edu] featured sites slider/directory?

Hi All,
I have been looking for a way to show off featured sites in our multi sites network: http://commons.trincoll.edu/
I thought this would be easy to find - surely there must be a features sites plugin that uses the sites categories plugin right?
I like the functionality at the Harvard site: https://blogs.law.harvard.edu/ but would hope for more visuals.
Does anyone have a good suggestion?
Thanks
dave
