 Thanks for the referral to #5979, @DJPaul. It's a closely related idea,
 but I think this ticket is a little smaller than that change. I've updated
 the patch to remove some cache manipulations that should no longer be
 needed, and also to remove tests that don't apply to the new behavior. I
 imagine I'll need to write some new tests to check some behaviors, but I'm
 not sure what those are yet.
