 Sorry to pick this up a month or two later, but I think if the SMTP
 plugins you are using can't send a test email (many of these plugins have
 an option to do that to verify it's working), then that problem needs to
 be figured out first. To a degree, BuddyPress builds on top of WordPress'
 email handling for SMTP, and we make the assumption that WordPress is
 always able to send emails.
