 I'm attaching a minimal patch that adds no outward-facing functionality
 but adds the `parent_id` column to the groups database and support for
 querying by `parent_id` via `groups_get_group()`. These changes would make
 it much more straightforward to add hierarchical group functionality via a
 non-core plugin.
