 Added a overview of state of play for bp-default to codex a while back:

 Based on:

 theme/

 The only change I thought had happened was the need for the add_filter
 'bp_do_register_theme_directory' being needed to restore the theme to
 selection page on existing installs, seemed to remember that was changed
 to an automatic process if bp-default was a selected theme but can't find
 the reference to that.
