 My patch does pretty much the same thing as Brajesh's. I just do it inline
 in the registration function, which is where we do other, similar checks.

 The current behavior is to surreptitiously change the space to a hyphen.
 I'm suggesting that we stop doing this, and instead throw a warning. This
 is pretty much what you have suggested.
