 I believe this is either a problem with the theme you are using or you
 have a partially-upgraded BuddyPress install.

 You said you tried using the BuddyPress Default theme and you experienced
 the same issue?  If you did, can you try reinstalling BuddyPress with
 fresh files and try using the BuddyPress Default theme again?

 About the sidebar, that appears to be a problem with your theme.
