 3253.1.diff is a swing at making this work. I broke the activity comment
 out into its own template, and it seems to be working well.

 Could I ask someone to give it a shot? If it works well, I'll write up the
 (enormous amounts of) PHPDoc necessary. Also, I'll port it over so that
 the template is responsible for the AJAX return.
