 this is a wordpress bug/issue - as buddypress uses wp_crop_image which
 does not check and retain the IMAGETYPE (ie, run imagegif, imagepng,
 imagejpeg) when resizing.

 i had to hack the wp-admin/includes/image.php to include the checks
