Comment:

 Sadly we can't translate variables. I went through something similar about
 a year ago when I was learning PO/MO's.

 Since pomo's just do string to string conversions, they have no way to
 understand what a PHP variable means. While PHP is smart enough to be able
 to parse something like this just fine, any POMO program won't be able to
 make sense of it, which usually results in errors in the translation file.

 It's frustrating, but you'll need to work this limitation.
