[buddypress-dev] friend invites outside of friend pages?

I'm trying to figure out how to alert a user in the BP template that  
they have friend invites without the user having to manually check the  
friend invite page. I'm trying to put an alert in the left "me"  
navigation but can't get the functions that work on the friend invite  
page to work there properly. Anyone got a clue, or can help me out?
